Carpentry 101
Uh-oh, I broke the table. What do I do? I believe this photo accurately captures the moment of panic before the brainstorm.
The human hammer puts the table back together.

Spreading the Good News
So, after lunch, I started handing them out. There was one little boy in the room, so I gave him one first. Then I gave one to each of the adults in the room. I made sure that I saved some for the kids in the other room and thought I'd give them some later when they came out after napping.
Well, the little boy I gave the first sucker to went and grabbed one of the kids out of the other room and brought him to me so that he could get one, too. He went back again and grabbed another boy and brought him in. Then he went and got the little girl and brought her to me.
After all of the kids in the family had one, all of the kids left and went outside. I was beginning to see a pattern. That first little boy I gave a sucker to was going to bring every one of his friends to me to make sure they got a sucker, too. I could also see a problem in that I didn't have enough suckers for the whole neighborhood. Sure enough, he brought several of his friends back to the house. Now, none of them was brave enough to come all the way in to ask for a sucker, and I didn't extend the invitation because I knew I didn't have enough.
Here's what I saw. That first little boy received something that was really good, a sucker. He wasn't just happy to have his own sucker, though. He wanted all of his friends to have a sucker, too. So, he went out and brought them one at a time to me so that they could enjoy it with him.
I think this is how the spreading of the gospel takes place. And, I pray that it begins to happen here in Senegal. It just takes one person receiving the good news, seeing the gift they've been given, and going and sharing it with someone else. Fortunately, we can bring all of our friends to God and never have to worry about Him running out.
As followers of Jesus, we've been given such a great gift. I pray that I don't just sit and enjoy it by myself. The joy of salvation can be multiplied by sharing it with those around me.
This is a great life lesson from a little boy. No wonder Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Lord, make me like this child, running to bring my friends to You.
This is the boy who wanted to share with all of his friends. May he one day bring them to Jesus for something even better than a sucker.

Shaping Lives, Shining Lights
The school's director has encouraged us with Acts 13:47, "For this is what the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' " That is an awesome task, and I'm glad to be a part of it. But really, the call is for all believers everywhere.
I really think the theme is cyclical. Jesus comes in and shapes us. In the process, we begin to shine His light around us. That, in turn, enables us, by the grace of God, to help shape the lives of those around us. Keep the cycle going!
Because I'm a teacher, my year really seems to begin with the start of school. So, with the start of the new year, determine to shine for Jesus wherever you are at and see what God will do through you.
God has been teaching me to pray with expectancy. As I ask Him to shine in and through me, I expect things to happen. I know that He has big plans in store, and I just keep asking to be a part of it. The beauty is that I already know it's what I've been called to. Check out Acts 13:47 again. It's your calling, too! Join me in proclaiming the Good News wherever God has placed you!

Just Hanging Out
Pop has grown so much since I first came in August. It's been fun to watch him grow and change. He'll be walking in no time.
Sharing a bowl of rice and fish, my favorite Senegalese meal. It is so good even though it looks really messy. Just looking at the picture I can almost taste those spices. I was so happy I got to share this with my friends.
Khadi, this is for you. Papa is so much bigger but not too big for "sac of ceeb." Wish you could see them.Tuesday, April 13, 2010
Spring Break Surprises
Look at that green grass, that beautiful yellow flower, and that heavy coat. Oh the differences between Europe and Africa! I made it to the top (barely). Must have air. Are there really more stairs up ahead? Oh well, I didn't have to exercise later. This was definitely a good workout for the day. And thankfully, going down was easier than going up.
I just wanted to show what a good friend I was. While in the airport, my friend ordered some hot chocolate from Starbucks. It came with lots of whipped cream on top, which she doesn't like. I decided to make the sacrifice for her and eat the whipped cream. Life can really be a challenge at times.
All in all, it was a good break from school, and I enjoyed my time. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had some place to go. I am also very thankful for friends who made the time go more quickly. Maybe someday I'll feel like a "grown-up." Then again, I enjoy being a "kid." Feeling like a kid keeps me dependent on God. I know I can't handle things on my own. May I never forget that I am His child in this journey into adulthood.

What a WAIST!!

In the league we played in, you had to have 3 girls on the field at all times. It worked out well for me. I had fun playing with "the guys" although I must admit I was a little nervous about fielding some of the big boys hard hit grounders. Thankfully, I'm still in one piece.
Thank you Coach Hand for teaching me to bat. I actually got some good hits. (There were some bad ones, too.) Pop-ups right in front of home plate are good for my humility. Thank you God for your grace!
Look at all of that American candy! This was one of the best parts of the weekend. Reeces are my favorite, and they had plenty! It was great!
Girl with a hotdog and Doritos and American candy spending the day playing softball right next to the ocean. Really? What more could you ask for? Great weekend!Saturday, January 30, 2010
Christmas in January
Pop was excited to get his baby powder and pictures. Okay, so maybe he really didn't care about any of that. He was happy, anyway!

I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas
Anyway, I loved getting to see my family over Christmas. We had a good time just hanging out and sharing about our lives. God has been good to provide me with such a loving family. We really do just enjoy being together. Merry Christmas!
Well, I haven't been this cold in a long time and probably won't be again for an even longer time. I'm okay with this. I like being warm. It's a very nice feeling. However, the snow falling on the ground outside made the cold weather worth it. This is a great Christmas memory!
